Surf and Turf meets The Birds and The Bees

When Jess from The Elven Garden asked for pattern testers for her new Roundabout pattern I couldn’t help myself and volunteered.

I’m on a (self-imposed) fabric buying ban but still get the Simply Solids stash club every month. When I saw all the pinks and oranges together I really wanted to make a quilt using just the two colours. However, when I started pulling fabrics for the Roundabout pattern I added some fresh blues to the mix. As a neutral I decided to use some Heather Ross fish which I got when Claudia from Machen und Tun München had her destash.

I loved the combination and soon started cutting. I checked the fabric requirements for all the colours but not for the neutral as I was convinced that I had enough of it. Well, long story short, I didn’t. After piecing two quarters I realised that I wouldn’t be able to cut enough for another two. I wasn’t going to unpick; unpicking foundation paper piecing is a nightmare and I didn’t want to waste my precious Heather Ross. So I hunted around in my stash for a neutral I would be able to use for the other two quarters and found some My Happy Garden by Cloud9 Fabrics that I used as backing for Little Miss Bossy-Boots’ flannel quilt.

The top was pieced with my beloved Aurifil thread (2000). I don’t really need to mention it anymore, do I? I don’t use any other thread since falling in love with it two years ago.

I have a few things I need to finish before I can actually think about quilting this. The plan is   to practice my fmq and hang it on my wall in the sewing room.

The pattern hasn’t been released yet but once Jess has finished all the editing you will be able to win a copy on her blog as well as all the tester’s blogs, including mine!

Mindless Flannels

A little while ago Katy from Monkey Do posted a picture on Instagram of a flannel quilt she had “mindlessly” sewn in one morning. I commented on it and said that I had some flannel I had bought in Denmark lying around that I wanted to turn into a quilt and that maybe I should just sew it together “mindlessly” too. Katy encouraged me to do it, so I did. The flannel is by Leslie Grainger for Robert Kaufman and is called Pretty Paisley.

Mindless Flannel Quilt

Sorry about the Instagram picture. I’ll get some better ones once Little Miss Bossy-Boots has opened her present and I’ve actually washed the quilt.

Oh my, I had so much fun chopping up fabric without a plan. I had to get the seam ripper out a couple of times but am so happy with the result. The finished quilt finishes at 39″ square, the perfect size for a small girl who likes to snuggle on the sofa with a good film.

The backing is a lovely Cloud 9 print from the My Happy Garden collection which I bought together with the flannels, although it didn’t occur to me at the time that they match beautifully. As I didn’t have a big enough piece of fabric in a colour that matched the flannels I decided to go with a scrappy binding rather than wait as this quilt is a Christmas gift for Little Miss Bossy-Boots.

The quilting was a quick affair, mostly because I had to get it finished before I picked up Little Miss Bossy-Boots from school on Friday. I basically quilted a circle and a square in each panel. At first I had thought of doing an all over design but decided against it as I wanted the quilt to be soft and snuggly.

Fabrics for the next quilt are already on the chopping block. The plan is to make a patchwork quilt in green and yellow with a little sprinkling of blue.

Fabric!

Now, I could bore you with more pictures of Little Miss Bossy-Boots’ room but I won’t because today our lovely postman brought me a package I was waiting for.

Last week I got an email from a lovely lady asking if I could make a bag for her daughter’s birthday. Of course I can. We checked out FabricRehab‘s website to find fabric for the lining and found this:

This is Griffith Butterfly by Alexander Henry and I snapped up the last two units. The bag itself will be made in denim and I think this lining is going to look lovely with it.

However, once Alison had left I couldn’t help but browse a little bit more and found these:

A lovely print by Kokka,

Alphabet Soup Boy by Riley Blake,

a Polka Dot Bundle

and, the piece de resistance,

Heron by Could 9 Fabrics which is 100% certified organic cotton. I am so in love with this fabric. I have no idea what I’m going to make with it but it will definitely be for me. And it won’t be used as lining in a bag, no I want to be able to admire it all day every day. Any suggestions as to what I could make with it?
